About the Presenter

Kim Burke, M.Ed

Kim is a dedicated special education teacher who has had the privilege of working with diverse learners for the past 30 years. Kim is located in the western suburbs of Chicago, and has worked in Naperville 203 for the past 16 years. Kim earned her M.Ed in special education with an emphasis on assistive technology and UDL from BGSU in Ohio, where she honed her skills in using technology to support student’s access to education and their environment. In addition to her role as a special education teacher, Kim has served as a Student Services Coordinator and coach for the past six years. In this capacity, she has worked closely with special education teachers and school teams to utilize data driven specialized instruction for the purpose of improving student outcomes and closing achievement gaps. Kim strongly believes that all students should have access to a rigorous curriculum and high expectations for learning, regardless of their abilities. Over the years, she has worked tirelessly to create inclusive classroom environments that promote equity, diversity, and inclusivity.

Karen A. Erickson, Ph.D.​

Karen A. Erickson, Ph.D. is Director of the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies at University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill. Her focus is on understanding the best ways to assess and teach reading and writing to children with the most severe disabilities. As a special education teacher, Dr. Erickson has worked to support students with a range of disabilities in a variety of classroom settings, particularly students who do not use speech as their primary means of communication.
