Lisa Erwin-Davidson and a team of researchers are involved in a five-year study to measure the impact of comprehensive literacy instruction in a range of classrooms providing special education instruction in grades 5-12.  During this on-demand webinar, Lisa provides the latest data collected and lessons learned and also :

  • Describes the community under study, and the need expressed by the community
  • Describes the collected data including direct observations, teacher-supplied assessments/progress, and SLP-supplied Communication Matrix Profiles
  • Shares student success stories and lessons learned that educators can implement now.

Examples of how Readtopia is used in these classrooms is shared.

This 60-minute webinar is  designed for Special Education Administrators and Teachers, School-based SLPs,  Pediatric OTs who work in schools, AT/AAC Specialists, and members of the IEP Team. that are using or are considering using a comprehensive literacy instruction approach.

In this on-demand webinar, hear quantitative findings in the form of graphs and data showing measurable increases in literacy levels for students receiving comprehensive literacy instruction compared to their peers in other classrooms who did not. 

In addition, hear qualitative findings and observations about the effectiveness of specific actions by educators and specific classroom arrangements that impacted literacy gains including the use of universal core words and the use of co-teaching models with an SLP. Lisa Erwin-Davidson, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Lisa Erwin-Davidson, Ph.D., CCC-SLP is a researcher, educator, SLP, and AAC Visionary. She is Assistant Professor in Communication Sciences & Disorders at  California State University-Fullerton. Her core beliefs about teaching include: (1) Teaching is critical, not only to my own scholarly activities, but central to future generations of speech-language pathologists. (2) Bridging research and practice is for the ultimate benefit of our clients/students/patients. (3) Through shared and respectful interactions, a truly civil society can prosper. This is realized through respectful discourse with peers and students at every level of inquiry and within an environment that fosters creativity and independent thought.

Karen A. Erickson, Ph.D.​

Karen A. Erickson, Ph.D. is Director of the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies at University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill. Her focus is on understanding the best ways to assess and teach reading and writing to children with the most severe disabilities. As a special education teacher, Dr. Erickson has worked to support students with a range of disabilities in a variety of classroom settings, particularly students who do not use speech as their primary means of communication.
